Diatomaceos Earth (DE) are the remains of microscopic one-celled plants (phytoplankton) called diatoms, and can be used as a non-toxic pesticide. DE has a particle size ranging from less than 1 micron to more than 1 millimeter, but typically 10 to 200 microns. Diatomaceos Earth lived in the oceans and lakes that once covered part of the US and other parts of the world.
DE has been discovered to be an effective and chemical-free treatment for intestinal parasites. Depending on the life cycle of parasites, it may be necessary to feed DE for at least 45 days in order to kill even the hatching eggs.
Perma Guard, the largest supplier of food-grade DE worldwide, recommends the following daily doses:
Kittens - 1/2 teaspoon
Cats - 1 teaspoon
Puppies - 1/2 to 1 teaspoon
Dogs under 35 lbs. - 1 teaspoon
Dogs over 35 lbs. - 1 tablespoon
Dogs over 100 lbs. - 2 tablespoons
*Humans - 1 heaping tablespoon daily
DE does not need to be refrigerated and is not perishable, provided you keep it secure and dry.
